VR tinkering
This has been on my mind for many months, I want to start making short little narrative experiences in VR.
I had been “noodling” with Unity 3D and the Unreal Engine on & off over the last few months. For this project, I will start off with Unity 3D.
I have a few ideas that I would like to work on & explore in VR. Actually this morning, I remembered one of the film treatments I worked on was about crows — in the morning when I go to the bus stop, I keep an eye out for the local birds; I saw some crows going about their lives flying around, perched in trees and looking for food. I think crows are fascinating animals. They are all around use in cities like Vancouver. They flounce around as if they are having fun instead of just walking across the ground & they never let people get too close to them. They watch us with wariness and caw at us when they are not happy about something. This made me think, I want to have some crows in this project. The narrative is still very rough — more to say later.
I am very unskilled when it comes to modelling. I just spent a bit of time looking for 3d models of crows on the Internet. I have seen some decent models but they are not the aesthetic that I am looking for but really I need to start building the scene in Unity before spending a lot of time on the look of the models. I will come back to the bird models later.
One of the challenges find with 3D is the extra dimension; I have worked on numerous projects in 2D. With 3D, I need to plan out what I am doing — just bashing things outs in the scene editor is goofy at this time. Yup, I need to start making some floor plans and layout the scene…
