I like your pragmatic approach, well illustrated, this really is a gem of an article.

You mentioned it would be an improvement to allow the user to switch between categories without an unnecessary tap.

I understand how your solution does that.

I wonder how many glances it takes your users to learn the categories so they don’t have to slide the secondary panel to the right before every tab change.

I hypothesize that under 5 categories it scales in a linear fashion but with more items than 5 (like in your case) it takes off to an exponential # of glances.

Care to share some findings about that?
