I tend to agree. Most of the shape note music I have been privy to experiencing (in these parts at least) do have a religious element; however, they seem to humanize the spiritual experience in a broader sense. I think that’s why I, even as an “Old Testament Believer” (Appalachian for “Jew”) can relate to it.
