Very well said, Todd Hooper — so very glad you came across my piece, and left a comment. You are right in saying we must teach our children, even if they won’t listen. When I was younger, I would sometimes become embarrassed of some of the cultural things my parents and other elders would do — ballad singing, for instance. I would enjoy them when friends or others outside the family weren’t around, just not in the presence of others. It wasn’t until I was older that I truly began to appreciate what was handed to me — and to generations of family before me — in terms of my culture.
