What beautiful words, Laurna Tallman! What a gift to hear the story of you and your husband collecting and preserving culture. I was taught many ballads myself, thanks to the appreciate my family had for our culture and their need to preserve our distinct ways — though I doubt I know nearly the 600 that Miss Riddle did. I am so glad you shared this with me! And I really appreciate the arc of your comment: “The secret to preserving a culture is to learn it and keep doing it.” Such wise advise. I’ll keep learning, and doing, and teaching to as many as I can. Thank you for taking the time to read my piece! I hope you’ll read more of my work.
