You can find Custard Apples Rev. Fred Denial in the States as well — not sure about grown, but at least in some grocery stores. But in our vernacular, “Custard Apple” (at least in Appalachia — can’t speak for other parts of the country) refers to annona reticulata — a completely different fruit. Perhaps one of them “instances of common things in US having very different names” which you speak of. Thanks for sharing those interesting tidbits of info!
