The scholars’ reaction described here makes me think of the tribalism that is so bemoaned these days. Where it doesn’t matter, for example, what Trump says and does, because he’s one of us and that’s who we are. The same principle seems to be operating for those who rushed to defend Avitai Ronell — she’s one of us; that’s all we need to know; evidence does not matter.
