Raspberry Pi Zero Plug-In Display
Raspberry Pi Zero Plug-In Display

Introduction

I wanted to create a simple, compact display driven by a Raspberry Pi Zero that plugs into a power outlet to display some useful information in my kitchen. No visible wires hanging out or anything that looks funky. I assumed someone already makes a Pi Zero case + power supply combo that I could just buy and plug in. Alas, I found no such convenient product on the interwebs (why?!?!?). Unwilling to accept defeat, I came up with a solution using off-the-shelf parts. This ended up being a fun little project from the hardware to the software. …

Raspberry Pi Crawl Space Humidity Monitor
Raspberry Pi Crawl Space Humidity Monitor

Introduction

There isn’t a more important and less pleasant part of your home than the crawl space. Unless you enjoy dark, dirty, claustrophobic places, there is a good chance you rarely visit your crawl space. The health of your home is highly dependent on the health of your crawl space. Nothing wreaks havoc on your crawl space like excess moisture problems. Mold growth, wood rot, and insects thrive in dark, wet spaces. If you want to keep an eye on the health of your crawl space, you need to monitor its humidity levels.

This tutorial will show you how to remotely monitor your crawl space humidity from your mobile device and/or laptop. This will allow you to not only see the current humidity level but also see the historical data over time without having to frequently go down there. This tutorial will also show you how to set up trigger alarms to text/email you whenever your humidity exceeds a certain threshold. …

Tesla Geofence: Automatic Text Message from your Model 3/S/X

*Update 11/13/2020: Unfortunately, Tesla has started restricting access to their API through most major services including AWS. This decision has broken this tutorial.

Introduction

Your Tesla can do many amazing things from driving itself to updating itself. Let’s add another cool trick — automatically texting someone when you get close.

Here is my motivation for implementing such a feature. Every day I pick up my daughter from swim practice, which means driving through an obnoxious pickup process. She stays inside until I arrive, park, and text her that I am here. Or, she just texts me over and over “are you here yet?” while I am driving. …

Introduction

If you own a Tesla, there is a good chance you fell in love with all of the advanced technology your vehicle puts at your fingertips. Geeking out about all of the things your car can do has become a favorite pastime of Tesla owners. While autopilot, sentry mode, auto-presenting door handles, frequent firmware updates, ludicrous mode, easter eggs, etc. …

Introduction

The software-as-a-service business model appeals to companies of all sizes from tiny startups to massive Fortune 500 companies. What company does not want predictable, recurring, scalable revenue? While the idea of SaaS has technically been around for decades, the proliferation of SaaS is still very much in its early stages today. Back in 2012 when I founded Initial State, there were not many people writing about SaaS, and a widely accepted “playbook” for building and scaling different types of SaaS companies did not exist. All too often we were winging it and learning the same marketing/sales/product lessons in parallel to other SaaS companies. The number of SaaS experts sharing their expertise on the interwebs has really ramped up over the last few years. All of these SaaS focused articles/podcasts/presentations have given us both invaluable help as well as contradictory advice as to what are best practices. …

Raising money sucks. Yeah, you have probably heard that a million times, but I cannot emphasize how soul draining the process of startup fundraising can be. After a few years of pitching, begging, and hair pulling, I managed to raise a few million dollars, mostly from Angel investors. I met a lot of people and learned a lot about the very odd, fickle world of startup investing. One of the first skills I had to pick up was quickly identifying what type of investor I was talking to. …
