Shame on You Google

Diversity means accepting the value of people with different views. Not isolating them or cutting them out but including them in the discussions. Diversity recognises everyone has value, the footnote to this is sometimes you have to listen very carefully before gaining the understanding of what this means. Words are tricksy things. Very precise on the one hand and sometimes very contextual. Intention is everything when unravelling the meaning behind the words. Since diversity and inclusion has been a long standing interest I’ve read the leaked memo a couple of times and while it is not written in emotional language I did not gain a sense of violence or discrimination in the author’s intent. In fact, to me as an outsider, it felt measured and considered. The author was careful to repeatedly voice his support for diversity while pointing out that some practices appeared to be moving in the opposite direction. All backed up with examples. Diversity asks us to find the “gifts” in the other person who appears so different. These gifts are not always comfortable but often are the gold dust financing change. Come on Google, you have the world’s gold in your pocket, show some real EQ and get to work on the hard work of making true diversity work. Put him back on post and learn how to include without using exclusion.
