Hi Dmitry. I did indeed read the entire post, and spent a fair amount of time on my reply. I’m not actually convinced you repaid me in kind here.
I don’t get ‘triggered’, nor do I subscribe to junk such as ‘microagression’ and the like. The part of the conversation about the movie being banned? Did you miss that in my reply? If so, please go back and reread that. It might help you understand a bit better about what I’m saying.
To glorify evil is to side with it. The statues of the Confederate anti Americans really don’t have a place in civilized society, just as statues of Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, Idi Amin, et al, have no reason to exist. I do not believe, STILL do not believe, that anyone will forget the events those subhumans led. It would be good to forget those named, however. They, not the events, are what I’d like to see not on public display.
However, I agree with John, going back to the movie banning. Just as some schools banned Huckleberry Finn, banning a movie like ‘GWTW’ is a stupid, and slippery slope to start down. These are works of FICTION, and somehow, people get all bent out of shape about that, for what they feel are the right reasons. Maybe they are to them. But, as John put it, where does it end? When there are no more books? Movies? Artwork? Music? I detest rap because of what it glorifies, but I have no intention of asking it be banned. Can I say the same for statues of cruel, anti Americans who glorified what they did? No. They do need to go, because music comes and goes, but solid bronze monuments last a long, long time in the public eye. You may not agree, and that’s fine, I don’t expect everyone to get along, or agree, on the subject. In 57 years, I’ve been in the south thrice. Once for boot camp, when it was in Orlando, and once to do some work in Norfolk at Oceana Naval Station, and again for my father’s funeral. I didn’t do much, if any, sightseeing, don’t recall seeing a statue that I paid much attention to. To that extent, I’ve got no skin in the game.
However, as an American, I would rather see permanent homage done to more positive figures in our history. Again, we are not forgetting the past. We simply need to not glorify the darkness when we can instead honour the truly brave and heroic people of our past instead. Especially now. If the idea is to move those statues to a special park, go for it. Charge admittance, and use the profits for good works. I’m all for that.
It really is that simple, whether you think it a straw man or not. Thats your personal take on things, that’s fine. It’s not, but hey, it’s your boat, baby. Float that sucker.
Peace in, brothah Dmitry…
