Mental health issues in adults

Adults are just as susceptible to mental health issues as children and adolescents. In fact, according to the National Institute of Mental Health, one in five adults in the United States experiences mental illness in a given year.

There are many reasons why adults might develop mental health problems. Some of the most common causes include:

Biological factors:

Genetics, brain chemistry, and hormonal imbalances can all play a role in mental health. For example, a family history of mental illness can increase a person's risk of developing a mental disorder.

Psychological factors:

Stressful life events, such as job loss, divorce, or the death of a loved one, can trigger mental health problems.

Social factors:

Poverty, discrimination, and social isolation can all contribute to mental health problems.

Substance abuse:

Alcohol and drug use can worsen mental health problems or even trigger them in some cases.

Medical conditions:

Some medical conditions, such as diabetes, thyroid problems, and brain tumors, can increase the risk of developing mental health problems.

Here are some of the most common mental health disorders in adults:

Anxiety disorders:

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the United States, affecting about 40 million adults in the United States each year.

Mood disorders:

Mood disorders, such as depression and bipolar disorder, are characterized by extreme mood swings that can interfere with a person’s ability to function in daily life.

Schizophrenia:

Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder that can cause hallucinations, delusions, and disorganized thinking.

Eating disorders:

Eating disorders are characterized by unhealthy eating habits and a distorted body image.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD):

PTSD is a mental health condition that is triggered by a terrifying event — either experiencing it or witnessing it. Symptoms may include flashbacks, nightmares and severe anxiety, as well as uncontrollable thoughts about the event.
