A Dark Knight Rises in a Grimy Gotham

The Batman (2022) isn’t your typical superhero flick. It’s a slow-burning, neo-noir detective thriller that dives deep into the psyche of a young, vengeance-driven Bruce Wayne (Robert Pattinson). Director Matt Reeves crafts a Gotham City that feels both hauntingly familiar and disturbingly new, a cesspool of corruption and decay that mirrors the turmoil within Bruce himself.

The Batman 2022 review

Pattinson’s brooding portrayal is a stark contrast to the often-charismatic Bruce Waynes of past films. Here, he’s a recluse, a creature of the night consumed by his obsession with justice. His Batman is brutal, almost feral, driven by a primal urge to punish the wicked. But there’s also a vulnerability to him, a flicker of humanity beneath the mask that makes him all the more compelling.

The supporting cast shines as well. Paul Dano’s Riddler is a chillingly sadistic villain, his cryptic puzzles and unsettling pronouncements keeping Batman constantly on edge. Zoe Kravitz is a captivating Catwoman, a morally ambiguous figure who dances between friend and foe. And Colin Farrell, under layers of prosthetics, is practically unrecognizable as the Penguin, a grotesque embodiment of Gotham’s criminal underbelly.

The film’s visual style is stunning. Reeves and cinematographer Greig Fraser bathe Gotham in perpetual twilight, casting long shadows and creating an atmosphere of oppressive dread. The score by Michael Giacchino is equally masterful, a moody blend of orchestral swells and haunting electronic whispers that perfectly complements the film’s tone.

The Batman isn’t without its flaws. The three-hour runtime can feel a bit bloated at times, and the pacing occasionally drags. The ending, while thematically fitting, may leave some viewers wanting more closure.

But overall, The Batman is a triumph. It’s a dark, atmospheric, and character-driven film that dares to be different. It’s a Batman story for the modern age, one that delves into the darkest corners of Gotham and the human condition. If you’re looking for a superhero movie that’s more than just flashy action and quippy one-liners, then The Batman is a must-see.
