Straight Outta Compton: 7 Things You Can Learn From NWA’s Story

Shouts to Kid Ink for the hat. Straight Outta LA!

Lately, we’ve all been getting bombarded on Facebook with everyone’s “Straight Outta Compton” memes — some funny, most of them pretty annoying. However, if you get a chance to see the movie, you’ll become immensely motivated by the characters and their individual stories.

While the movie itself tells a great story, there are many traits you can pickup on to better your own life, and realize your true potential. There are no “special” people that create stories like Dr. Dre, or Ice Cube, everything you need to be great is already inside you. Stop waiting for someone or something to light your fire. You have the match.

Below are the top 7 things I pickup up from the movie. If you see others that you picked up on feel free to leave a comment!

1. Loyalty

One way or another, your loyalty towards others is tested everyday between friends, family, and even newcomers in life. It’s a characteristic that becomes the ultimate foundation of any relationship between you, and another being.

We look for loyalty everywhere, in the office, at home, in our friends, even from our cats and dogs. We often use it as a measure of these relationships and hold the most loyal people to the highest esteem.

What? You don't take selfie sticks to the office? #Gravity4 #BeLimitless
There’s no rules against selfie sticks in the office… I

The truth of the matter is, you’re never going to “make it” on your own, and it’s important to remain loyal to others who have helped you get where you are. There’s truly nothing better than going on that rollercoaster journey to success with those who genuinely hold your best interest.

2. Your Gut

Stick to your own gut! Don’t let outside influences have an impact on your thoughts, your actions, or your work. In fact, I encourage you not to give a shit about anything that doesn’t directly affect you this week, and see how much better your week becomes.

You may be the only one who can see things the way they are. And, while it may feel different to stand alone at times, learn to trust yourself and trust your own instinct.

3. Speak The Truth

Luckily our generation has more influence on speaking their voice — at least with Twitter and Facebook. Freedom of speech is precious, even when it’s the blunt truth.

Make it your mantra.

Speak up and fight for everything you stand for. If you don’t stand up for yourself or your own values, no one else will give a shit to, either.

You’ll always be confronted with someone opposing your views. F**k ‘em! It’ll pay off in the long run.

4. Change

Don’t be afraid of change — it’s the only constant thing in life. Whether it’s with other humans, your living situation, your daily routine, etc. Everyone can relate to change.

It not only expands your horizons, but also gives you something new to look forward to. Diversify your life portfolio, and learn to explore yourself.

5. Forgiveness

What’s the point of holding grudges? How long do you plan to hold the grudge against someone you called your friend, or someone you have memories with?

That would be #GoodForYou

Holding your grudge won’t benefit anyone, so don’t waste your energy on past mistakes. Rather, learn from it, and move forward.

6. Work Hard, Play Hard

When it’s time to work, hustle like there’s no tomorrow. Whether you’re on a phone call, in a meeting, or writing emails — give it your 100% focus. And similarly, when you’re resting or enjoying yourself, make sure you do that to the max as well.

Find a balance between your work, and turn-up time. Make a mark on this world while pursuing your goals; success becomes much greater.

7. Dream Big, Hustle Harder

Every day when you wake up, there should be no other thoughts than to wake up with a dream, and hustle to make it a reality. Everyone is given an opportunity to dream, so take advantage of that.

Last night before I went to sleep around midnight, I opened my Notes app on my phone, and wrote a list of things I need to get done today before I put my head back on that pillow. This morning when I got up at 5, the first thing I did was check my Notes app, watch my favorite Monday video (below), and then got right to it.

Watch this every Monday morning! Get’s you fired up!

If you have the ability to read this article right now, there is no reason why you shouldn’t be working towards making your dream a reality.

Wake up, realize what you have to do, hustle, make your dream a reality, sleep, repeat.
