Travelling — gym for the mind. 5 whys.

People sit in the office. All day.

Corporations can give you “home office” Friday. Which is the advantage over those that don’t offer that opportunity.

Whenever I can, I try to convince people that should travel for no reason, that travelling should be their gym for the mind. Here is why:

  1. Bill Bryson, Best American Travel Writing 2000 said “The greatest reward and luxury of travel, is to be able to experience, everyday things as it for the first time”.
  2. The more people you meet and talk to, the better you become in empathy. Empathy is crucial when you are in business. Relationship with other people can’t be on one side only. The invisible bond requires empathy.
  3. There is a rule that startups try to make the action: “get out of the building”. Steve Blank (I had a pleasure to meet him personally) explains that entrepreneurs fail when they wait too long to gauge real customer interest in their products. Getting out of the building means travelling and interacting to people. Getting feedback.
  4. World is getting flat. Globalisation requires action with people from different cultures. We need it to grow, as Mark Twain said “Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all of one’s lifetime”

“So travel, for no reason”
