I’m so glad to have read this (as well as the comments below from others). YES, not every woman needs to be a mother. I’m thirty-six, married for fourteen years and committed to a kid-free life. Some remarks and counter-remarks we’ve had along the way:

  1. You’re self-centred: Yes, I do like to take care of my own self.
  2. Who’s going to take care of you when you’re old?: Oh, and I’m the selfish one?
  3. Your family line will cease to exist (a typical Indian thing): What, who am I? The empress of the world?
  4. You’re so elevated — you would make a difference in the world with your kid: How about give me a chance to make a difference in the world myself?
  5. What would your contribution to the earth be without kids?: Mmm, about 20 metric tons less carbon footprint per kid.

Seriously, people are so thoughtless with their questions!
