I really enjoyed your analysis here. I teach Coppola’s <Somewhere> in my first year writing course, and we talk a lot about her work in regard to Laura Mulvey’s gaze theory — which as you note above, should really be labeled white, male gaze theory. I’m always amazed when film critics of Coppola’s work write thoughtfully about her aesthetics (and how she turns Mulvey’s white, male gaze theory on its head — which arguably she does very well) without acknowledging the whiteness of that theory.
