Name Tag

A social experiment

About a year ago I decided to try a simple social experiment:

As often as possible, when I encountered someone with a name tag, I would use their name in my interaction with them.

Observations and Musings:

  • Being an introvert, I found that most of the time I would use it on my way out. “Thanks Judy” and not during an actual conversation.
  • My kids often asked if I “knew them”
  • I got in trouble from my wife for calling an amusement park worker “Igor”, but that WAS his name.
  • There was a general positive reaction
  • I felt like I was doing good.
  • I found I am more likely to speak up and say something now.
  • I hesitate to say their name if I am unsure of how it is pronounced.
  • Generally, we like our names and perk up when we hear it, it adds a level of authenticity to your interaction, from both perspectives.

In our digital age, it is all too easy to be consumed every minute of our day with a screen in our face and not recognize the ‘real’ people in front of us. A recent study found that people were actually happier if they made a ‘social interaction’ with the barista who served them coffee . This human interaction is even more important now than ever. Not only does it have the potential to change your day, it might just make the day of those you interact with.

So what’s next?

Put your phone down. Be nice. Be kind. Say hi.
