The investigation in Part 3

Theo starts his own investigation into Gabriel’s murder because he thinks that knowing what happened before the crime will help him find Alicia. Paul, Alicia’s cousin, and other people with ties to her life are among the people he speaks with. He learns that Gabriel’s adultery with Alicia caused friction in their marriage.

Theo falls for Alicia and becomes emotionally involved in her case throughout his inquiry. He thinks she will tell the truth about the crime once he helps her find her voice.

Part 4: Revealed Secrets

Theo’s perseverance is starting to pay off. Alicia starts to trust him as a result of her therapy sessions and artwork. She exposes a startling secret in a vulnerable moment: she was aware of Gabriel’s relationship and had intended to confront him the night of the murder. Theo also learns unsettling details about Paul, the cousin of Alicia. It is revealed that Paul had used Alicia as a pawn in a sinister psychological test involving her work. The character of Alicia and her interactions with others around her become more nuanced as a result of this revelation.

The Alcestis Connection in Part 5

Theo grows more and more certain that Alicia’s artwork “Alcestis” contains the secret to the truth as the narrative goes along. He researches Greek mythology and discovers the story of Alcestis, a woman who gave her life to save her husband. This story serves as a metaphor for Alicia’s own hardship and sacrifice.

A remote cottage where Alicia and Gabriel had spent time together is the location of Theo’s investigation. He finds a secret diary kept by Gabriel there. The diary shows how much Gabriel cares for Alicia and how worried he is about losing her. It also raises the possibility of an explanation for Alicia’s silence.

Part 6: The Shocking Twist

In a dramatic climax, Theo finally pushes Alicia to speak. She utters a single word: “Alcestis.” This revelation leads to a shocking twist that redefines the entire narrative.

It is revealed that Alicia had indeed shot Gabriel, but the motive was different from what Theo and the reader had initially believed. In a moment of despair, Alicia had discovered Gabriel’s diary, which contained a shocking confession: Gabriel had been in love with Paul, Alicia’s cousin. The affair was not with another woman but with Paul.

Alicia had confronted Gabriel with this revelation, leading to a heated argument. In a moment of rage, she shot him multiple times. Her silence afterward was not due to guilt over the murder but was a way to protect her cousin Paul, whom she believed she had wronged by killing the man he loved.

Part 7: Consequences

This information sends Theo reeling. He comes to the realization that his own fixation with Alicia had rendered him unable to recognize the reality that was right in front of him. Paul is confronted by him and confesses to controlling Alicia and causing her pain.

Alicia transfers to a different facility at the book’s conclusion, where she eventually starts to communicate and recover. Theo, on the other hand, is forced to deal with the fallout from his actions and his patient-obsession. Theo considers the effects of his engagement in Alicia’s life as a result of his and Kathy’s decision to part ways.
