How to use it?
A user must have a discord account(obviously) and then join the official midjourney server. When a user joins the server for the first time, the user can enter any appropriate group in the server and can use midjourney discord bot to generate images. `/imagine` command pulls up a prompt input space where you can describe the image you want to generate. Write the prompt and you’ll get 4 images based on that.
Unfortunately, free trials aren’t always available due to extreme demand. These things are expensive to generate. So, you can try a subscription starting from $8/month if you’re interested.

Why does using Discord make sense for midjourney instead of creating their own application?
Currently,at the time of writing this, there are 14,739,651 members on this server. That’s a staggering 14.7 million users. According to their official website, midjourney is an independent research lab with a small self funded team. It has just 11 full time staff.
Now, if they didn’t use discord and instead made their own application or website to generate images, they need to also work on something to replace discord. They need to handle cloud storage, accounts, authentication, etc. Imagine doing this for 14,739,651 users. Such a waste of time considering the fact that there are numerous other applications out there that can already handle all these tasks.
Consider payments for instance. If you need to add payments option to your application, you can either add paypal like applications to your own application or you can replicate paypal and create your own application to handle payments. Do you see the point here?
Moreover, using a discord server even comes with an additional benefit of messaging between midjourney users. In summary, Midjourney can benefit from using Discord by leveraging its existing infrastructure and features, saving time and resources that can be better spent on improving the core service.
