While speaking against the president in front of cameras Governor Andrew Cuomo has received thousands of dollars from President Donald Trump behind scenes. Harvey Weinstein, a Hollywood executive who violated scores of women, was able to get the probe handling his case removed. Weinstein’s former law firm poured thousands of dollars into Governor Cuomo re-election bid six days before Cuomo stopped the probing into the Weinstein’s case. Governor Cuomo’s actions confirm that he is not true to the values that he espouses as a “progressive” politician and places money above the needs of his constituencies. New York women, their families, and their allies must hold Governor Cuomo’s feet to the fire and send a powerful message #ReturnTheMoney! #TIMESupCuomo
Demands for Governor Cuomo:
- Immediate return of Weinstein’s former law firm’s $25,000 donation.
- Immediate return of Trump’s $64,000 donation.
Cuomo’s financial backing is against the needs of Black women and other marginalized communities. Cuomo has been consistent, backing the powerful against women, against workers, and against New York. Give New Yorkers a fighting chance and vote Cynthia Nixon.
For too long our state house has been influenced by Wall Street elites and Hollywood executives who prey on women and working class people. Weinstein, like Trump used his power to protect himself from criminal liabilities for sexually abusing nearly 80 women over 30 years. Black Womyn, Trans-Womyn, Femme, and Gender Nonconforming people and communities, have been disproportionately impacted by sexual abuse and misconduct. “Black Mama’s: Stories, News and Analysis by Black Women’s Blueprint” — reveals girls in black and brown communities experience rape at 60% higher rate before their eighteenth birthday. Governor Cuomo your acceptance of Weinsteins and Trump’s donations has left generational blood on your hands that is rooted in state-sanctioned violence against black women. Historical deprivation of black women’s sexual and reproductive rights has shaped the way that society (including Trump) views on all women’s rights. Black women’s bodies, since the Transatlantic slave trade have always been subjected to experimentation, sexual and physical abuse, rape culture, and deemed as other people’s property.
We cannot allow Governor Cuomo to caucus and campaign like a Trump- Loving Republican, and continue to put black women, hell all women, in New York state at high risk. We understand that sexual violence impacts all ages, race, gender, socioeconomic status, and ethnicity. However, among people of color, American Indian (65%), multiracial (59%), Middle Eastern (58%), and Black (53%) respondents of the 2015 U.S. Transgender Survey were most likely to have been sexually assaulted in their lifetime. Governor Cuomo’s decision to accept funding from former Weinstein lawyers at the expense of women being able to take full ownership and control over their bodies, and allowing women to be violated and harmed without accountability continues to perpetuate systemic and generational violence against women. We will not tolerate this injustice to our sisters in New York. Please join us on Sept.8th and 9th as we canvass for Cynthia Nixon, and #VoteCuomoOut
