Is this totally fair?
I agree with you that support is not a favor or a gift and these comments with even a hint of “Well, with thanks like that maybe I’ll go support someone else,” are ludicrously immature. Your points on these topics seem obviously true.
But is it true that if someone decides to express support in some way that they’re beholden to anyone in the way that they choose to do it? In other words, support is not a gift or a favor or employed service. But that also means that it’s not owned by anyone except the supporter. Telling someone they’re not doing it right presupposes that there’s even a one right way to do it. Or that something as deep and universal as this is even restricted to being about any one group.
I don’t know. A lot of these comments are goofy. But to be fair, there’s an aspect of the original piece that is as well. I guess it seems to me like no one’s brought their A-game on this one.
