A fitting name for a revolutionary funding option
It’s called Republic.co and it is one of the first crowdfunding platforms that allows for every day American business owners to list their company in order to seek an equity or debt investment from the American public. Who are these American public investors you ask who would be able to invest in these ventures? ANYONE regardless of income. This is a huge step in American capitalism. As a follower of the crowdfunding movement for quite some time, I am amazed to see this new site pop up that seems to understand how to facilitate these transactions better than I have seen any other entity try to date.
If you are curious as to what the law that allowed this funding phenomenon to occur was, I have written a post on LinkedIn that gives more of a summary of why this is so exciting. The post was entitled, “The Rise of the Average Joe & Plain Jane Venture Capitalists.” In that post you will see the risks and rewards that are going to be evident as this funding option begins to gain traction and becomes more popular.
There are going to be a lot of risks in this part of the investment world and as such, I foresee the opportunity for review sites to come into the picture that ultimately serve as an investor education and investor protection service. As a small example of such a website, I created the concept RepublicReviews.com, a site that could be used to protect unaccredited investors from unscrupulous investments. I am not sure if I will do anything with that site, but it is just a small example of the type of service that I believe would be necessary to educate people who are planning to make an investment in a private startup company.
Being away from the business world for the last 7 months, I have a lot of catching up to do. I am confident however that the business world will change for the better with the advent of these new funding options that are now coming online for small business owners and investors to match up and create opportunities for Americans across this country. Will keep you posted on more insights as I see them.
