Students from Nalanda University came to study from Korea, Japan, China, Tibet, Indonesia, Persia and Turkey not just from India. This university was internationally reputed from the ninth to the twelfth century. The university was a wonderful specimen of architecture. Its entire complex was surrounded by a huge wall, which had the main entrance to enter.

There was a queue of monasteries from north to south and there were many grand stupas and temples in front of them. The idols of Buddha were installed in the temples. There were seven large rooms in Kendriya Vidyalaya and there were three hundred other rooms apart. Lectures were conducted here. Thirteen monasteries are found in excavations here. There was a stone porter for sleeping in the room. There were gems for keeping the lamp, book etc. There was a well in the courtyard of each monastery. Apart from eight huge buildings, ten temples, many prayer rooms and study rooms, there were beautiful gardens and lakes in this complex.
The University’s Vice-Chancellor or Head Teacher was elected by the monks.

The Vice-Chancellors used to manage the affairs in consultation with two consulting committees. The first committee looked after education and curriculum and the second committee looked after the financial system and administration of all the universities. The committee used to supervise the yield and income generated from the two hundred villages that were donated to the University.
