Thanks, Shankar! Great Question… I think there are 3 potential fits in the larger user journey (can you guess which is mine? :)

  1. A standalone experience for existing Evernote users: That is to say, users continue to manage the full Evernote system in the primary app while using this app solely for adding voice dictated notes. Ecosystem app development is popular for a couple great reasons (think Messenger to Facebook): 1/ We navigate mobile from an OS-level app launcher and notification system (an app on your OS is much more accessible than a feature within an app), and 2/ Primary apps get weighed down by extra features for fractional use cases.
  2. An integrated feature within Evernote’s existing app: One-touch launch for a dedicated voice notes experience is plausible, right? The advantage here is that you already have an installed user base and could promote the use case. The disadvantage here is, well, you’ve seen the Evernote home screen, right? ;) Not much space for yet another user path. I will mention, however, that Facebook went so far as to turn the Messages icon on their primary app into a glorified app launcher for their standalone Messaging app — a ballsy, controversial play that has ultimately proven to be hyper strategic to winning mobile messaging.
  3. A unique application that is usable without Evernote’s full suite of features: Someone looking for voice note dictation without the bells and whistles of advanced note management. The main advantage here is an opportunity to attract a new market of people and develop a relationship under a less intricate premise. How many users are they currently ostracizing with the complexity of the primary app?

That said, I think some combination of the 3 is probably the right execution for a company like Evernote. Give your core users access to this streamlined use case without weighing down their current experience, and give non-users a new reason to enter the Evernote ecosystem under a clear and simple premise.

Fun to riff on this stuff! Would love to hear your thoughts.
