Thom Tillis
Thom Tillis, born Thomas Roland Tillis, is the one and only senator from North Carolina.
Tillis is was born in Jackson, FL on August 30, 1960. He was raised with five siblings and they were used to moving around a lot due to his father’s job. After high school graduation, Tillis could simply not afford higher education. Instead, he took on a job in a local warehouse and worked his way up in rank there. During this time, he married and divorced his high school sweetheart, twice. Then, in the 1980s, he met and married the woman he is still married to today, Susan Tillis. Thom and Susan currently reside in Huntersville, North Carolina, located about 30 minutes north of Charlotte, North Carolina.
Thom Tillis is a proud member of the Republican Party. In 2006 he was elected to the North Carolina House of Representatives and took a step up as Speaker of the House from 2011–2014. He took position as senator in 2015 and has held the seat ever since. He almost lost his seat to his running opponent, Cal Cunningham, in the 2020 election. He managed to just barely slip by with a 1.8% lead in the polls.
When former President, Donald Trump took office, Tillis stood opposed to the president’s views on immigration, such as the wall that would separate the United States southern boarder from Mexico. However, Tillis had a change of heart three years later, in 2019 amid speculation of the Federal Bureau of Investigation involving Mueller.
In March of 2021 Thom Tillis announced an unfortunate diagnosis. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer and underwent surgery in early April 2021. He claimed early detection saved his life with his diagnosis but has not made any further comment about it advancing. He underwent a successful surgery and is glad to be back on the job full time.
