All night,

You counted the bodies.

-

The tired old zebra skin,

The ball-and-claw legs

In their previous parlor

Where worn velvet curtains

Had previously stood.

-

For a moment,

You paused.

Your pale blue eyes looked down at me.

One sad gesture of apology

As you whispered,

-

“They killed my mother.”
