Medium.com Weekly 001 by Miki Szeles
There is a tremendous amount of awesome content here on Medium.com. My daily habit of checking Facebook and Instagram whenever I have a few minutes switched to reading Medium.com and Hashnode articles. Actually, I got totally addicted to it. The first thing in the morning is to check my Medium Daily Digest and read whatever seems interesting to me. Ok, I have to admit, sometimes I read the Hasnode app’s recent section first, but it is only because I do not have to wait for that. 😊 It is so cool that I can open the articles from the Daily Digest email right in the app.
I have decided to collect the articles I found the most insightful into a weekly post, so I can let you know some awesome content and it will also be good for myself as a reference.
As I am mainly interested in Software Development, Testing and Automation, Data Analytics and Deep Learning, Self-improvement, Blogging, Productivity and Psychology, you will find articles mostly related to these topics. This time I focused mostly on testing as I was amazed how much good testing articles are there here on Medium.com, compared to other blogging platforms.
My favourite article from this week is The Golden Handcuffs in 2022, Is your high-paying job actually ruining your life? from The Test Lead. I can highly relate to this topic. Reading the article I realized I was imprisoned by the Golden Handcuffs for years. The last few years were the worst period of my life both professionally and personally. I have a wife and a son, about whom I have to take care (financially). For years I did not quit my job because of the Golden Handcuffs. I went into complete depression and it took me years and the help of a professional, to get out of this situation. I was the perfect exemplar of the impostor syndrome. But I learnt something very valuable from this experience. The Golden Handcuff is very often just an illusion as you can get the same or even better benefits at other companies.
Sorry for the interruption, let’s continue with the articles.
Blogging
- Growing my audience (on LinkedIn) is one of my main goals for this year, so reading Tim Denning’s My LinkedIn Grew from a Few Thousand Views to More than 50M Views When I Did These Things was a valuable way to spend my time.
Self-improvement
- Sam Wren-Lewis writes about the importance of self-acceptance in his article The Wisdom Diaries.
- Tony Robbins is The Name when we are talking about personal breakthroughs and life transformation. He can engage thousands of people for 4 consecutive days during which he really transforms their life. So whenever I saw the name Tony Robbins in Tim Denning’s post, I was sure I will read it: Seven Unbelievable Things I Learned from Tony Robbins in the Last 30 Days
Testing
- My favourite article from the testing category is written by Anna Chernyshova. She wrote about a self-healing testing framework that can adapt the code to changes in the UI. It is an astonishing concept. However I am a big fan of Selenide when we are talking about E2E automation, but I am open to new amazing things, so I will definitely give a try to Healenium.
- Anton Smirnov Smirnov shared a list of useful Chrome extensions for QA Engineers. This time he missed my Chrome extension Selenideium Element Inspector, but hopefully, it will be on the next list. 😊
- Case Study: Automated Testing ‘Login with Remember Me’ in Selenium WebDriver is a repost by Zhimin Zhan who shared the article of her daughter Courtney Zhan. From the article, you can learn how to reuse the Chrome user data profile.
- In Is the Test Automation role challenging? Sajitha Pathirana collects the skills required to be good in test automation and he also wrote an article about What to master as a Test automation engineer and a third one about The two roles you can play as a Test Automation Engineer.
- Being a Software Developer, whenever I hear the word codeless it immediately fills me with suspicion but since I started to use Karate DSL for API testing where you do not have to write a single line of code just some sentences in Gherkin language this reflex has changed a lot. The QA Talks Community brought an article about the current status quo of codeless test automation: Codeless Automation Testing 2022
- Kelly Chin writes about her journey in the field of QA.
- In QA Automation: How to start and define your roadmap
Clovis Bernier introduces a quite sophisticated algorithm to prioritise test cases for test automation. - Cloudytechi compiled a list of API testing tools in the article Best API Testing Tools in 2022. For my pleasure, Karate DSL was also listed.
- Thanks to Payton O'Neal I learnt about a new concept (for me) called Visual testing in his article Functional vs. visual testing: What’s the difference?
- Marcelo Soares wrote an interesting article called Stop trying to measure test coverage!
- Gary Parker provides some interesting insights about How do the big name companies test?. I have just finished reading “How Google Tests Software” and I have already started to formulate my learnings into an article. You can expect it next week.
- 5 Blogs That Changed My Software Test Engineer Life is a great writing from Jolivé Hodehou.
- Harish Rajora listed 13 Test Automation Frameworks and their most important features. I am only sorry he missed 2 very cool frameworks from his list Selenide and Karate DSL.
- Priyanka Brahmane wrote about my favourite API testing framework in her article Various Actions in Karate DSL. I highly recommend reading it.
- The best practices test automation with Selenium WebDriver. is a great article from Anton Smirnov about the most popular E2E testing framework.
- I have learnt about a great tool OWASP ZAP from Gary Parker’s Implementing security coverage for GitHub workflows article.
