I so enjoyed this analysis, Owen. All the responses you quote from are interesting and revealing. And very helpful to me, as it turns out.

Like you, I am not an economist, but have wandered into this minefield with the intention of stimulating discussion. The article I published about the Australian situation seemed to touch a nerve.

I am worried that the current debate, in the Anglophone countries particularly, hinges on ideology, with appeals to popular misconceptions and traditional values, not sound economics.

I like your work for the Guardian, by the way.
