Those are some pretty shitty comments. I don’t know what the answer is, though. Asking social media companies to police the internet and make them ban people for expressing their opinion is not the answer.
Honestly, I think the reason this happens (and it happens to men and women, not just women) is because the average person online who comments is motivated to comment because they are unhappy with how little influence and importance their life has in respect to the celebrity (or whomever else they are bashing).
The average person is extremely frustrated with the inequality in our society and when they go online, they have an avenue to vent and sort of “equal the playing field”.
They see a rich, pretty successful girl and they are just looking for a way to trash her. So, any chance they get, they go for it.
I find myself also being jealous of these celebrities and their influence (and success) and it often does feel like the game of success is rigged and I missed out. I don’t think I have ever commented like these idiots, but I can see jealousy and unhappiness with life leading others to do this.
I don’t know exactly where the line is, but for me, calling a person a name and threatening them are different categories. And a repeated, consistent pattern of doing it to the same person could be considered harassment, but I think proving harassment has to have a high standard. One shitty comment to a celebrity doesn’t constitute that at all.
