Is it necessary to have centralized services for social media at all?
I think this is precisely what RSS was designed for. Google’s subversion of the RSS community through building and destroying the beautiful Reader tool was the turning point in their abandonment of their former “non-evil” mission.
The tech still exists though, and we should start to use it.
Of course there’s always gramma, who’s been trained to use Facebook to keep up with her grandkids! But a client side proxy Facebook client could go a long way toward filtering out the BS for committed users.
The new Firefox virtual Facebook browser window tool is a great start for a serious effort in this direction.
