I don’t feel like this article is saying you have to travel and get out of your home town in order to break free of the expectation trap – just that it’s easier if you do. I moved states and essentially live the same life here as I did there (if you look at it objectively) but it FEELS more exotic. If we can step off the hamster wheel in our home town and be satisfied that we’re doing what we love instead of working the ordinary life, even better. You save yourself thousands of dollars 😉 but only if you really ARE pursuing your passions there. It’s easier to slip into a comfort zone rut at home than when all your surroundings remind you to be your adventurous self.
