i like this. the more i think about happiness as a goal or metric for a life-well-lived, the more i think it falls short. it’s so fleeting, as you say. but what are the alternatives? i don’t know. i guess legacy (is there a word that’s less-heavy but still means basically the same thing?) — if you go through the struggle required to create something that can be a self-expression and a contribution to others; something that outlives you; something that you can be proud of when you see it becoming — i suspect that could be a better motivation than the elusive illusion of happiness. and if that hard-earned pride and confidence leads to feelings of joy and happiness from time to time, well, i guess that’s ok, too.
