It’s kind of crazy you’d post this a few weeks after I battled with the Ogopa DeeJays website to purchase their albums (mixtapes?), Ogopa 1 & 2. This was definitely the golden age of Kenyan urban music: creative, catchy, lots of radio airtime and a genre rivalry that prevented complacency (full disclosure, I was a kapuka guy).
Anyway, since I’m certain you will dedicate a whole post to E-Sir, I will only give him an honorable mention as I digress to one song that absolutely summarizes this period of my life: Boomba Clan’s Chonga Viazi.
This track and video had everything. A cheesy video, an incredibly relatable situation, a catchy hook, and this line:
“Peel off another one, just like the other one!”
I think this single came at the tail end of the golden era, but it was so feel-good that I have to pick it over other contenders for the nostalgia award like Githurai. I look forward to this series as we reminisce the accomplishments of these pioneers — good work!
