Apple has slowly been incorporating OLED screens into its devices, starting with the iPhone X and Apple Watch. But the technology has yet to make its way to the iPad lineup. That’s expected to change soon, with rumors pointing to OLED iPads on the horizon. The shift would bring not only visual improvements, but also enable new functionality like an always-on display. For iPad enthusiasts longing for a major overhaul, OLED may represent the next big leap.

LCD’s Limitations Highlight Why OLED is Long Overdue for iPad

The 11-inch iPad Pro reveals the constraints of LCD technology. While bright when viewed head-on, the screen becomes muted at off-angles. This is especially apparent when watching videos, where letterboxing and shadows lack depth. For gaming, the enhanced contrast and blacks of OLED can’t arrive soon enough. After over half a decade without a major redesign, the iPad is overdue for the visual pop of OLED.

Beyond Stunning Visuals, OLED May Unlock New Functionality

OLED isn’t just about better visuals. With the technology, Apple could introduce an always-on display to iPad, similar to the iPhone’s Standby mode. This would transform the iPad into a dynamic smart display for info at a glance. OLED could take the iPad from a content consumption device to a true productivity tool.

The Next iPad Pro May Bring Most Radical Redesign in Years

Rumors suggest OLED is imminent, with Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman hinting at a 2023 OLED iPad Pro release. Gurman described it as the “first major overhaul in half a decade,” with both 11-inch and 12.9-inch models in the works. If true, it represents a monumental update for the iPad Pro lineup.

LTPO Tech Could Push OLED iPads to New Performance Heights

Adding credence to the rumors, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said two OLED iPad models will adopt LTPO tech. Used in iPhones and Apple Watches, LTPO allows variable refresh rates down to 1Hz, optimizing power draw. Kuo asserts these OLED iPads will surpass the Mini LED-equipped iPad Pro in display quality and efficiency.

For iPad users eager for innovation, OLED technology represents a long-awaited moment. With their commitment to Displays, Apple is poised to deliver an OLED iPad that sets a new bar for tablets. The future is OLED.
