Policymaking should be ideology-agnostic. When rulers wear ideological blinkers they implement policies that cause more suffering than improvement in people’s lives.
The role of government in society has been hotly debated. The Left wants the government to have a commanding role in the economy. The Right feels the government is part of the problem and not the solution.
Since the free market is not really free- monopolies stifle competition and crowd out smaller players. A few companies wield enormous power. Therefore the government should play the role of an umpire and enforce the rules. Whether governments can be allowed more role depends on the robustness of checks and balances that will prevent abuse of power by the rulers and bureaucrats. The strength and integrity of institutions also play an important role in ensuring the fairness of the system.
