Female Focus- LJ Natural
Lisa Johnson- LJ Natural, Wilmslow
Introducing Lisa, a very busy Wilmslow mum with two kids, two dogs and managing to run her own successful business. Like many of us after having kids she was in need of something new, something more passion than position! And so in 2009 LJ Natural was born. Lisa always suffered with eczema and had spent a lot of time looking for more holistic solutions. Now a fully qualified clinical aromatherapist (which is miles away from her background in sales & marketing!). She makes her own range of products using the highest quality organic ingredients and finest, freshest essential oils. They are free from sulphates, parabens, petro-chemicals, artificial colour and fragrance and all chemical nasties. Designed to work in harmony with your skin and are affordable enough to use every day. Calming, healing and gentle products, perfect for the whole family, handmade in small batches with love and care.
I wanted to find out a little bit more about Lisa, her amazing products and how she manages to find the elusive work-life balance. Lisa had some great tips on how to relax.
You are a super busy mum running your own business, how do you manage to juggle it all?
With difficulty. I take the kids to school at 8.45 then go straight to work, then back to school for 3.30 to pick them up, normally working a solid 6½ hours with no break. We get home, I sort out housework, laundry, make tea, help them with homework, reading etc, walk the dogs, do the shopping (usually online) and try to catch up on everything that needs doing around the house. Some nights when I’ve put the kids to bed, I do some more work, either catching up on admin and emails or making more products. I never sit down; hence why I am normally looking a little scruffy and stressed!
Can you tell me a little bit about your amazing products?
I started making products when I couldn’t find anything to use on my own very sensitive and eczema-prone skin. I found a gap in the market for affordable organic beauty products for normal mums like me. I retrained in aromatherapy 8 years ago, having left behind a very stressful sales and marketing career, and now spend my days making a range of 100% natural and organic skincare that works on all skin types, even sensitive skin and eczema. I do a range of face and body products and some specifically for eczema. They are all handmade with high quality, organic plant oils, butters and essential oils. Most of my products contain only around 7 or 8 ingredients. They are also completely cruelty free.
Children of all ages bring different struggles, what has been your most recent?
With my 8 year old son I struggle to get him active — he loves his laptop and iPad, playing things like Minecraft and Roblox. I have a real struggle to get him to come away from the screen and get some fresh air and exercise. I basically give him a set amount of time at the screen then take it away from him and make him go on the trampoline. It’s really easy to let your kids just stay on their screens if you’re busy, but I’m careful not to let that happen too much.
With my 10 year old daughter I’m just trying to teach her about good skincare routines. She has eczema too, and whilst I know exactly what we need to do to keep it under control, she’s at an age where she might choose to eat foods that might make it worse (sugar and sweets!) and she’s started wanting to use skincare products (cheap cosmetics full of nasty ingredients!) so I’m currently struggling to get her to listen to me about what’s good for her and what’s not. I know she won’t always do what I suggest and I’ve got to learn not to be a control freak!
Do you make sure you take time for yourself? If you were to #JustTakeTen, at the end of a busy day what would you do?
I’m unfamiliar with the concept of taking time for myself….. But given ten minutes I would absolutely have a lovely hot bath with some gorgeous essential oils, a bit of lavender, geranium and rose I think! With plenty of Epsom salts, which are extremely beneficial for busy mums. I love baths and they are very good for us; particularly if you leave your electronic devices outside the bathroom and take a big glass of wine in with you!
Do you have any favourite local places to go with the kids at the weekend?
We like to go out for a walk with the dogs; we love The Carrs, Styal Mill. As well as the more unknown parts of the Edge and the pete bogs at Lindow. We are very lucky in Wilmslow as there are so many gorgeous rural places to walk.
