Our journey from Boston to Atlanta — July 08.2016 to July 09.2016
Well, after having only an hour of sleep we hopped in the car and started our road-trip adventure… time: 12:05 am. Our goal was to get to Atlanta same day (17ish hours of pure driving according to Google Maps, meaning without stops.). One may think that such a long drive after having little to no sleep is virtually impossible especially when there is only one driver. Unbelievably, it was pretty easy to stay awake when all you feel is excitement for what is to come and you have an awesome copilot -haha-.
Bueno pues después de haber dormido solo una hora, nos montamos al carro y empezamos nuestra aventura en carretera muy a las 12:05 am. Nuestra meta era llegar a Atlanta el mismo día de la salida (aproximadamente 17 horas en el carro según Google Maps sin contar paradas). Cualquiera diría que es casi imposible estar alerta y despierto con semejante viaje tan largo, una hora de sueño previa y un solo conductor. Increíblemente, fue bastante fácil mantenernos despiertos con tanta emoción y expectativa de lo que nos quedaba por delante y claro la ayuda de la super copiloto-jaja-.
On the road…
The drive was a great time for us to go crazy with planing and to discuss random things that we do not usually get to, because of our work schedules… including websites, games and apps. Guess what, we both like trying new games and we had been looking for a game that would invite users to be out there in the real world rather than indoors, by yourself. Sadly most games got rid of the part I used to love the most: getting together with friends to level up, to complete missions, or to just have someone to figure out tricks or shortcuts with; of course without using the Internet. Anyway, we ended up downloading Pokémon Go and it was fantastic using the game as an excuse to drive to unplanned locations to “strech our legs” (MundoNucita dictionary definition: catch some Pokémon and check out PokeSpots).
En el carro la pasamos genial discutiendo y planeando diferentes cosas para las que generalmente no nos queda tiempo por los horarios de trabajo…hablamos de paginas web, juegos y aplicaciones. Adivinen qué, a los dos nos encanta probar nuevos juegos y recientemente estuvimos buscando uno que invitara a los usuarios a salir al mundo real en lugar de quedarse entre cuatro paredes y solo -lastimosamente la mayoría de juegos de deshizo de lo que más me gustaba: reunirse con amigos para subir de nivel, completar misiones o simplemente para dar con los trucos o atajos sin necesidad de usar la internet-. En fin, terminamos bajando Pokémon Go y fue genial usar el juego como una excusa para ir a lugares que no eran parte del plan para “estirar las piernas” (definición en nuestro diccionario: atrapar Pokemones y visitar PokeSpots).
More unplanned stops…
Yeah, I know… who in the right mind would add more detours with 17ish hours of driving planned already, well MundoNucita -us- would, because why not. For this added excursion, we visited Luray Caverns, which we both enjoyed so much. We went on an hour long guided tour that, for the most part, was not really for us. We got more into admiring the views and taking pictures at our own pace using all the cameras (Bryan has an Olympus E-P2, a GoPro Hero4 Silver, and a smart phone. I have a Fujifilm Instax mini 8 camera and a smart phone). The Caverns were breathtaking and the perfect trigger for our imaginations. We played games with the cavern structures similar to how people stare at clouds and imagine; we saw shapes, worlds, stories, and even thought of movies & shows that looked like this setting… OH! and yes, the underground sets from the Gears of War games were in our thoughts. I do not think I have ever seen anything like it and that is probably because I did not travel this much before. We goofed around in the caverns taking pics and Bryan took a picture of me with my teacher look (yeah, The Look that makes students believe that I’m serious). I’ll let you guess which one it is from the pictures below.
Sí, yo sé … a quién con aproximadamente 17 horas planeadas en carretera se le ocurriría incluir más paradas, bueno pues a MundoNucita -nosotros- pues ¿por qué no?. Fuimos a las Cavernas Luray y las disfrutamos al máximo. Estábamos en un tour guiado pero la verdad no creo que podamos decir mucho en detalle pues nos dedicamos más a mirar el paisaje y tomar fotos a nuestro ritmo con todas las cámaras (Bryan tiene una Olympus y una GoPro — Yo tengo una Instax y el celular). Las Cavernas fueron impresionantes, además nos transportaron a un momento de pura imaginación intentando descifrar las siluetas y mundos en las formaciones de la caverna, crear historias e incluso trajeron recuerdos de películas o programas de TV que tienen escenarios como las cavernas. Nunca antes había visto algo así, probablemente porque no solía viajar mucho. Jugamos tomando fotos y claro Bryan me tomó una foto con mi mirada de profesora (sí, esa mirada que me crean que en enserio) Adivinen cual es.
We made it to Atlanta!
Yeah! After the Caverns we committed to only making essential stops so we could make it for a late dinner. After about 12 hours into the drive , it wasn’t quite as easy to keep Bryan 100% alert on the road… oh, we did nap for 45 minutes somewhere and then right back on the road. I’ll expand on tips for staying alert later on…TK
Después de las Cavernas estábamos determinados a llegar a tiempo para la comida (cena) así que decidimos que sólo tendríamos paradas necesarias. Mantener a Bryan 100% alerta y despierto no fue tan fácil como al principio del viaje, sobre todo después tantas horas manejando y habiendo dormido tan poco. Ah, sí hicimos * motoso de 45 minutos en algún lado y luego de vuelta a la carretera. (*en mi familia así le decimos a tomar una siesta). Después comparto más información y trucos para mantenerse alerta y despierto em un viaje como éste.
Soooo, we got “home” (home is wherever we are together 💕) to spend some quality time with family and SEE all the renovations made to the house, which we had heard about over the phone. In the morning, we went on a walk around the neighborhood … yeah I know you can imagine why… Pokémon hunting! We caught over half a dozen and walked further than planned in the process, because hey, once you see there is a Pokémon near by you just have to go for it.
Anyways, we enjoyed the walk and probably creeped some neighbors out with our phones held up, like we were taking pics of their yards, and pointing at random spots with excitement. The beauty of having a gamer by your side.
Finalmente llegamos a “casa” ( nuestra casa es donde sea que estemos juntos 💕 ) para pasar tiempo en familia y VER todas las renovaciones de las que tanto hemos escuchado por teléfono. Luego salimos a dar una vuelta por el barrio … Sí, ya sé imaginan el porqué quisimos salir a caminar por ahí … ¡A buscar Pokemones! Atrapamos como 6, caminamos más de lo planeado pero pues una vez ves en el mapa que hay un bicho de esos cerca pues es imposible no buscarlo.
En fin, disfrutamos la caminata y asustamos a más de un vecino pues parecía que estuviéramos tomando fotos de las casas y apuntando a cosas con cara de picardía jajaja. Lo chevere de jugar con alguien que te entiende de jugador a jugador.
The rest of our stay was great. We tried the new entertainment system my in-laws got…and LOVED it. We played some pool, ninja pool (=my own rules haha), walked around the backyard and found something completely cute and better than any Pokémon: tiny frogs!
El resto de la estadía fue genial. Probamos el nuevo teatro en casa de mis suegros y me encantó. Jugamos Pool, pool estilo ninja (osea con mis reglas jajaja ), caminamos en el patio y encontramos una cosita absolutamente linda y mejor que cualquier pokemón: ¡ranitas diminutas!
Sadly, our stay with family got to its end, but not before rearranging our car to have better access to essential items on the road. Playing Tetris as a kid totally paid off. See mom, it wasn’t a complete waste of time.
Nuestra visita llegó a su final pero no sin antes tener que reorganizar el carro para poder tener mejor acceso a lo esencial en carretera. Ves mami, todo ese tiempo invertido jugando Tetris no fue tiempo, ni platica perdida jajaja te lo dije.
At 11 pm we were told to go to bed so that we would have enough sleep for our 6 am departure the following morning. But we couldn’t go to bed without documenting our visit with my new toy, the Fujifilm Instax camera. Looooove it! Every shot counts with this camera, since it prints the photos immediately. It is great to go back in time with this camera trying to figure out how to take the best shot without a selfie stick, screen preview, editing options and unlimited attempts. So, we really tried to take just one but… couldn’t. Sneak peek! (In the photo below)
Muy a las 11 pm nos mandaron a dormir para que estuviéramos bien descansados para salir a las 6 am de nuevo a carretera. Eso sí, no podíamos irnos a dormir sin documentar nuestra visita con mi nuevo juguetito: la Cámara Instax. Me fasciiiiiiiina. Es chevere volver en el tiempo con ésta cámara intentando acomodarse bien para que salgan todos sin selfie-stick, pantalla para ver como va a salir la foto, opciones de edición ni intentos ilimitados. Así que intentamos tomar sólo una pero no se pudo, tocó 3. ¡Ahí les dejo!
