first job…
As part of this week’s project, I called in a Gym even though this isn’t my dream company but I applied as I was sure that getting job in a Gym is difficult thing because on an average they require 2 to 3 years of experience so obviously you are not eligible if you are a fresh graduate and secondly they prefer Gym trainers who have ample knowledge of exercises and a bit of food and nutrition. I thought it would be worth taking shot so I decided to approach a Gym, I searched some Gyms online and made a list of gyms along with their contact numbers and mailing I.Ds. I made almost 30 calls to different gyms and asked them for their H.R mangers, a few gyms which are well developed had H.R and I also gave a telephonic interview to an H.R, I realized that even if you are calling in an organization to ask information about any post or something related to job be prepared to answer them “why you”. So the moment you think to apply for an organization be very prepared with the answer to this question.
Out of these 30 Gyms I spotted two gyms where I really wants to work and I sent my resume and cover letter in 8 gyms. When I made a cover letter, and tried to individualize it, in this attempt I searched some facts but I thought they can be writing in a cover letter for any gym so I wrote 1st paragraph of my cover letter as following:
6 months back I heard name of “ABS Wellness Club” and since then I am fond of your work. I am pretty amazed by the techniques and theories you people practice. I have seen body transformational stories over your Facebook page, I have read customer reviews which gave a pretty decent idea of your awesomeness. To me the thing that makes your gym different from conventional gyms is that you prioritize your customers and the sessions you provide them are tailored according to individual’s needs. Your club is amalgamation of everything a human body desires.
But there was a Gym who said come for in person session, I thought I have to drop my resume in one Gym also so let’s try this one. I went there, the moment I arrived at the main gate of the gym I was actually able to hear my heart pounding, literally it was loud enough to be heard. I tried to calm down my nerves and I moved in spent few minutes on reception and they let me in. Where my interviewer only asked me a single question related to my field all other question were random, I got an idea that this interview is not structured and I am structuring my interview myself. I figured out that behind every question my interviewer wanted to check my passion for this post and fit also.
At the end of the interview, my interviewer told me that I reminded him of this starting days in this field. When he completed his M.Phil. He applied for the post of gym trainer in Shapes, it is a well-recognized gym in Pakistan. He further added that my interviewer selected me only because I was passionate about this job and this is the same thing I see in you and is the reason I am hiring you.
There are some things I learned during this whole course that do not make your resume to much complex because it will distract reader and will prevent him to get the details out of it and he almost skip the most important things.
