Play Spotify On Your Sonos Without a US Credit Card

A guide to activating Spotify Premium for Sonos when you live in a distant country that nobody likes

I never thought this day would come, but my Sonos is actually usable now.

After a 4-hour weekend project, I finally managed to subscribe to Spotify Premium and can now play music on my Sonos from all my devices. I did it without opening a US bank account or ordering a credit card.

If you’re in a similar situation, I hope this guide can save you some time.

Get a Virtual Credit Card

Before going over why, let’s cut to the chase. It will save you a lot of time if you get a card on Entropay or similar options before doing anything else.

I chose Entropay because it topped most lists for top Virtual Credit Card providers (google it), and while other providers like PayPal or Mastercard are more familiar, Entropay was the only that was available in my country, and if you’re outside the US, it’s probably true for you too.

It doesn’t look like much, but the setup is simple and you will have a card that you can use to pay Spotify within seconds.

The Virtual Credit Card (VCC) is prepaid and you can “top it up” with $50, $100 etc, from your existing credit card or bank account. I chose $50.

The reason you need a virtual credit card is that Sonos only works with Spotify Premium. If you don’t have Spotify Premium and Spotify isn’t available in your country, then you will find it near impossible to subscribe without a US credit card, or a Paypal attached to one. If you don’t have access to a US card or address. A Virtual Credit Card (VCC) is the easiest to use alternative I found, after hours of trying to trick my VPN, to no end.

Purchase Spotify Premium using a VPN

Once you have a VCC, use a VPN (my favorite is Hola) to access your Spotify account at play.spotify.com.

  • In your VPN, choose the country where your virtual credit card is registered — for Entropay, this means Malta.
  • Go to settings to upgrade to premium. Enter your new credit card information there.

Once you have Spotify Premium, the VPN’s job is done and you can delete it if you’d like.

Updating Your Sonos App

The SONOS integration with Spotify is a relatively new SONOS feature. If it doesn’t work, follow this guide to download the latest software version.

Congratulations! Now that you have both Spotify Premium and the SONOS beta app, restart both of them and move on to the final step.

Connect SONOS to Spotify

follow the instructions on the bottom of the SONOS & Spotify blog post to connect the two.

Voila! You’re done.

Enjoy your SONOS + Spotify connection. Let me know in the comments below if you have any questions, or if you have any tips for my next weekend project: SONOS + Pandora. :)
