Letting Your Heart Break
Melinda Gates

Thank you for your insight. I learned about the power of witness from my mother’s songs: it’s a familiar theme in American folk music. There’s the little sparrow, and other birds. It teaches us that if a single soul sees injustice, the injustice is not forgotten, and suffering of victims can live in memory until the day when justice comes. People often have experiences where they regret not having acted, or where they felt powerless to act. It’s important to acknowledge the power of witness so that testimony is not buried by shame. If not for the little sparrow, injustice is suppressed or forgotten.

By clapping more or less, you can signal to us which stories really stand out.
