Slade frontman Noddy Holder’s stage persona is of an extravagantly-dressed man, belting out glam rock hits like ‘Cum on Feel the Noize’ and ‘Merry Xmas Everybody’. But the man his wife knows is laidback, and a creative force who has proven invaluable in helping her write her debut novel about a woman in love with Beatles bassist Sir Paul McCartney.
Suzan Holder, who has been with 75-year-old Slade singer and guitarist Noddy Holder for 32 years, is touring her first book, ‘Shake It Up, Beverly,’ named for the Beatles’ 1963 hit ‘Twist and Shout. Set in modern-day Liverpool, it tells the story of a Beatles-obsessed 50-something looking for a man to love as much as she loves Sir Paul.
The 56-year-old author said advice from her husband had been “something to behold,” and that he loved seeing her have a go in the spotlight. “He really is quite laidback and I’ve been with him for so long,” she told Lincolnshire Live.

“It’s a bit like being Doctor Who’s assistant — he has the adventures, and I’m on in his trail. Which is fine, but it’s a bit new for me to be doing the interviews.”
Mrs. Holder said she had her rockstar husband’s support from the beginning. “He always thought I could do it before I did and he was always saying, ‘Yes you can,’” she said.
“So when I did it and got the two-book deal, he just said, ‘I knew it.” She added that he’d been giving her advice on what to wear and was ‘great’ for bouncing ideas off.
“He’s so creative,” she said. “Nothing fazes Nod — he’s the most complex person to faze.
“I hated having my picture taken, but Nod is so grounded and just told me to ‘get over it. ‘You can’t shake a rocker, they just roll with it,’ I say.
“I’ve been around musicians a lot and they are the most laidback guys you can meet — they’re nowhere near as high-maintenance as you’d think.” She’s dubbed the adult novel a “rom-com for rock chicks” and said she drew on her own ‘funny and terrible’ dating experience in her teenage years and throughout her 20s when writing.
“I’ve written a book about a love of music when I’m married to a musician but it just kind of happened that way,” she said. “There are so many good stories around the music industry, and it’s the kind of book I’d want to read.
“And we’re still talking about the Beatles. If you love the Beatles, I’m sure you’ll love the book.
“If you don’t, you will after you read the book.” She added that a lot of Slade fans had expressed interest in the novel, and she’d received ‘great feedback’ from the male readership.

“It’s not a girly book,” she said. “There’s a lot of music information there and I did my research.
“I’ve weaved Beverly’s life through the history of the Beatles.” The book launch was hosted at the Beatles Museum in Liverpool and was attended by Sir Paul’s brother, Mike.

“They say that you shouldn’t meet your heroes, but I have met Paul a few times and he is utterly fantastic,” the author said. “I dropped him a quick email to say I’d written the book and it was all done with love, and the next day I got an email back.
“He said it all sounded fab and wished me luck, but said anyone finding Paul McCartney an ideal man is a bit of a stretch. Well, everyone has their favorite Beatle, and Beverly’s favorite is Paul.
“And there’s a lot to love about him.” Mrs. Holder will be in Retford at a Pies, Peas, and Performance event on Saturday, June 18, reading extracts from the book and sharing her stories — including how she met the man she knows as ‘Nod’ while working as a journalist in Birmingham.
The Hell-Fire Preachers will be performing Beatles tracks, and tickets priced at £12.50 are available at the Wonderland Bookshop on Carolgate and More than Flowers on Coronation Street.
