HOT industry sectors in which I’m looking to invest right now?

Short answer: no such thing.

Longer answer: I keep getting asked this question by entrepreneurs, journalists and others. Now I think there are great companies and teams in every “hot” sector as well as other companies in those same sectors which are, er, less deserving of attention. I think pegging such-and-such sector as a must-invest (or must-not-invest) does entrepreneurs a grave disservice. I much prefer to evaluate each company on its merits.

None of this means that I don’t have pre-existing views on any given industry sector. If your company develops custom IT solutions on a time-and-materials pricing model, you’re certainly going to have a hard time convincing me that I should invest in your company. But simply throwing buzzwords at me — “Big Data!” “Social!” “Cloud!” — isn’t necessarily going to sell me either.
