VR Will Break Museums

Sorry for VR advocates, but this arguement is based on a very limited view of what a museums is. Providing context is one role museums play and VR is certainly a powerful tool for providing context to objects, but every new technology has done that. Photos, films, QTVR, audio tours. None of these have or will replace the object itself. (The still definitive writing about this is Walter Benjamin’s “The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction” from 1936.) Yeah, VR is great. It may change museums, as other new tech has done, but it sure as heck won’t replace them.
