Important EU Events: 24th July – 30th July
As it’s approaching summer season, the EU institutions are starting to wind down their work and this will be the last week anything substantial happens until the end of August/early September (with, of course, the notable exception of the next round of Brexit talks held in August).
The European Parliament is already on holiday, with only mainly meetings of the Council preparatory bodies and the College of Commissioner’s final meeting before the summer taking place. This means no new legislative files under the ordinary legislative procedure can be adopted until September at the earliest.
Monday, 24th July:
Informal meeting of competitiveness ministers:
- Informal meeting of Research ministers in Estonia.
- Ministers will mainly discuss the interim evaluation of Horizon 2020 and the future of European research & funding.
Statement by Commissioner for Neighbourhood Policy & Enlargement Negotiations Johnannes Hahn in view of future and past visits and meetings with the EU’s Southern Neighbourhood countries.
Tuesday, 25th July:
- Chaired by the High Representative Federica Mogherini and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Egypt Sameh Hassan Shoukry.
- The Association Council is expected to endorse the EU-Egypt partnership priorities for 2017–2020.
- Global and regional issues will also be discussed.

EU-Turkey High Level Political Dialogue:
- High Representative Federica Mogherini and Commissioner for Neighbourhood Policy & Enlargement Negotiations Johnannes Hahn to host.
Wednesday, 26th July:
Weekly meeting of the College of Commissioners:
- The situation in Poland is to be discussed. Potential rule of law recommendation, potential infringement proceedings launched. Potential delegation of power to the Commission President & First Vice President over the summer break to launch infringement proceedings.
- State of play of the proposed new USA sanctions on Russia to be discussed.
- 9th Security Union Progress Report.
- 14th Report on Relocation and Resettlement.
Meeting of the Committee of Permanent Representatives (Part 2):
- Plus a meeting in the Article 50 format (without the UK): state of play.
- Migration on the Central Mediterranean route, EU-India Summit, mandate for negotiations with the EP on the Blue Card directive, Agenda of JHA Council on 14 Sept, EU-Turkey High Level Political Dialogue to be discussed.
- Draft EU-Guinea good practices for the efficient operation of the return procedure to be approved.
Thursday, 27th July:
President of the Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, & President of the European Council, Donald Tusk, to meet the Prime Minister of Slovakia, Mr Robert Fico.
Friday, 28th July to Sunday, 30th July:
No relevant meetings.
