Distraction Burnt My Boiled Eggs

I burnt boiled eggs today. I know. I know. Who the heck burns boiled eggs.
I was distracted. I was distracted by an onslaught of freshly minted words. They arrested my mind mid egg boil and demanded immediate regurgitation. Good distraction? Definitely. At least for me. The eggs, not in the slightest.
Creative flow and the eventual attainment of excellence is predicated on focused attention. But here’s the thing. When it comes to distractions, one-size does not fit all. What may aid in one person’s progress, may unleash unabashed chaos on another’s best efforts.
So who determines which is which? Who’s the expert du jour?
You do. You are said expert. You get to call the shots on this one. That sure beats some stranger with a book deal (including me, sans the book deal) telling you which distraction you should or should not allow into your sphere of concentration.
To successfully identify the ‘should’ and ‘should not’ be present distractions, you need to undertake an introspective journey of self. You must sync up with your circadian rhythm and determine when you’re at your best. You must identify your strengths and weaknesses in relation to the distractions that arise. You must become self-aware.
“A distraction does not pull you away from your primary goal, but it reveals your true desire.”
It’s not abut eliminating distractions for they do have some benefits. It’s about creating a space for them that doesn’t compromise your focus.
John Di Lemme said “Your results are the product of either personal focus or personal distraction. The choice is yours.” Bear that in mind as you begin to sort through your distractions.
Now let me go try this boiled egg thing again. Good luck eggs!
