Evolution — Readings from Premam, Her & Ex Machina
I happened to watch these three films recently and also had a conversation about the direction that human evolution is taking in our internal design discussion session. I was thinking about it for quite some time.I wanted to share some insights that I got (very subjective) while brooding over it.
The future will have three distinct groups of species — Pure Homo Sapiens, Hybrid Homo Sapiens and Pure Machines with consciousness.
Pure Homo Sapiens are someone like the Amish people https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amish where they have consciously stopped using technology after a specific time (breaking point). They will go back to their roots and the signs of it are already there e.g. slow food movement etc. Emotions are valued more than the intellect in their society. It will thrive with all the age-old arts and crafts (like films :) ). And the role of designers will be similar to what we have now but more at a personalised level for the common good.
Hybrid Homo Sapiens are the ones who we will see in our very own lifetime. Fascinated by technology but longing for something human. Emotion and Intellect in a never ending war. They are the ones who are going to decide what the future of this planet is going to be. The artists, designers and the creative people. They no more design stuff. They design culture. They create the world with infinite customization. A whole world for you with your personalised preferences.
Pure Machines with consciousness is just a dream now. I guess we will not be able to see this in our lifetime. Most valued quality will be intuition, empathy, disorderly order etc. They are the ones who are going to explore this universe. There is no more a designer-developer role but one who creates a consciousness. I assume collective consciousness is possible but, I doubt the possibility of individual consciousness. It’s beyond my imagination.
There is one quality that is common in all these three species and that is empathy.
“God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them”
Even Gods are empathetic. So the future is in the hands of these empathetic designers of now. Do not forget this when we design, also Miyazaki’s words
The wonder of living, the wonder of dying
The wind, town, and flowers, we all dance one unity
Somewhere a voice calls in the depths of my heart
Keep dreaming your dreams, don’t ever let them part
Why speak of all your sadness or of life’s painful woes
Instead, let the same lips sing a gentle song for you
The whispering voice, we never want to forget,
In each passing memory always there to guide you
