Avenir Font

Research

  • designed by Adrian Frutiger
  • released in 1988

Avenir is a sans-serif font, belonging to the Geometric sans-serif/Humanist sans-serif font classifications .The font was created to be a member of the sans-serif style but updated- which is fitting as the name, Avenir, is French for future. Frutiger says this font is the best work he has done, truly capturing the humanist approach. The font had three different font weights upon release, intending to look the same depending on background/text colour combinations.

Breadth

Experimentation with different line/axis layouts and colour schemes.

Depth

or the first one I immediately wanted to change the colour scheme to seem more futuristic and updated- as Frutiger intended the font itself to be. I also added depth to the shape (hashtag) by duplicating it. For the Second piece I once again changed the color scheme, but I also broke up the text to be more visually appealing and to break it down in general since this is a post. Lastly, the third piece I decided to off set the tiers in AVENIR to make it more cohesive, the original felt off do to the letter spacing. I also filled the corner circle out more.

Chosen Depth- Critique-based Iteration

Taking peer critiques over the original depth posters, decided on depth 2. Critiques included changing the spacing in the copy in order to address an odd sense of flow within the poster. Additionally, changing the sans-serif to make it look intentionally different from the type and moving “French for future” up in the hierarchy as it is an important aspect of the typeface. I changed it to be in French to be more interesting, this works because it is still clear what it means.
