There are a lot of leaders who are front-running in the adoption of IoT in their enterprise digitization strategy, many of these are interesting stories, that I think, can open-up and inspire you. I started going across the globe and across the business verticals to see and compile it for you. These are just small bites of details of a large portion of the meal. Here is the compilation of some of the stories of the real-world IoT adopters that I found interesting, the order is random and does not signify any ranking or priority, here we go!!

#1 RioTinto

RioTinto uses IoT on their loaders in the mines to determine real-time heat maps of road roughness which allows them to optimize the wear and tear of their heavy equipment and save millions of dollars. Reference: AWS IoT

RioTinto is an Australian-British multinational and one of the world’s largest metals and mining corporations.

#2 Trenitalia

Trenitalia With more than 1500 train set running more than 7,000 routes per day, Trenitalia shifted from corrective/ reactive activities and maintenance plans to a system that reflects the real conditions of each train’s components. These efforts resulted in a clearly de ned three- year implementation blueprint for the Dynamic Maintenance Management System (DMMS), which partners with Italian system integrator Almaviva for IT implementation and SAP for the data platform and analytics.

Trenitalia now knows that route-specific factors (hills, curves and local routes with many stops), along with kilometers, have a direct bearing on brake pad life. Combined with the addition of new health measures, such as brake pressure and temperature and whether the brake is on a locomotive or a coach, Trenitalia has been able to optimize brake pad utilization and reduce maintenance activities without impacting safety or reliability. Reference: Gartner

Trenitalia is the primary train operator in Italy.

#3 Walmart

Walmart is transforming retail operations and customer experience by using IoT, ML, and AI. Walmart’s IoT patent application, titled “Retail subscription in the internet of things environment,” describes adding IoT tags to products based on Bluetooth, radio frequency, infrared, NFC, or other technology. The tag would monitor product usage, and automatically order refills/replacements when needed. The tags could also track expiration dates and product recalls. Reference: CBInsights

Walmart Inc. is an American multinational retail corporation that operates a chain of hypermarkets.

#4 Enel

Enel uses AWS as its IoT platform for energy management. They are building gateways for homes and their power generation sites so they can act and process large volumes of data within milliseconds. Reference: AWS IoT

Enel is an Italian multinational manufacturer and distributor of electricity and gas.

#5 Tata Power

Tata Power worked on a state-of-the-art IoT solution to create process efficiency in monitoring and harnessing insights from the data collected from an internal Geographical Information System (GIS). It also allows information to be converted into actionable insights in real-time which in turn will help drive operational efficiencies. Reference: Money Control

The Tata Power Company Limited is an Indian electric utility. The core business of the company is to generate, transmit and distribute electricity.

Thanks for reading the part #1 of this series, I will continue to compile more stories in the days to come.
