Focus On What’s Important To You
In a world that values ‘viral’ content, it’s important to step back on occasion to reflect on why it is that making an image is important to you. It’s all too easy to take dozens of photographs with our mobile devices in any given day. It’s so easy, as a matter of fact, that photographing any arbitrary element has become the norm. Observe how normal it is to reach for the phone, er, ‘camera,’ to snap a shot of your latte or sushi dish, followed by immediately ‘instagramming’ it after it’s been presented.
There are countless ways our attention is torn between matters at hand such as face-to-face conversation, but instead is directed towards making a swipe across the small screen of our handheld devices that beckon constantly.
I created a recent illustration titled, ‘Missing Out’ to explore the concept of distraction. While humor can certainly make the point, I’m not sure anyone heeds the advice of ‘being in the moment’ unless a concerted effort is made.
When it comes to making an image take the time to be in the moment of doing that one activity, and doing it well. Save ‘social’ for being social and don’t rob yourself of the opportunity to be present with others in what can be the chance to be truly engaged.
