Over the past one year, I have gotten in the habit of reading and listening to books. When I started this habit, I must say I found it very frastrating. The main reason being, my inability to grasp the concept as quick as I used to five years ago. After much contempleting. It dawned on me, I had lost my ability to concentrate. I would start listening to a book and 30mins in, fall asleep. I had even less patience for reading 5 pages in and I yawn, become uncomfortable and do something else.
After a few months of waking up to a book and edging time out in the day to read. It got better. I now can read for hours. I have particularly gotten in the habit of waking up to an audio book as I do my morning workout. So I dedicate this article to exploring the shift. Getting to the bottom of my new found superpower.
- Number one — I recoken the more you do something, the more comfortable you become doing it. It must be accumulated efficiency that comes with time. Constantly putting yourself in a situation focuses your mind. It forces it to adapt. It’s visible in our environment yet such a strange concept to most. We see it in plain sight and it’s simplicity is mind blowing. The plants around us are always adopting, shading leaves, growing flowers, bearing fruits. The longer it lives, the smarter it becomes.
- Number two — you are constantly evolving, accept it, embrace it. Have you ever met a person with rigid language? Or rigid lifestyles. They believe they were created a certain way, and they cannot do anything about it. Everyone else around them needs to change and Match to the rythme of their drums. They become angry and frustrated when things don’t go a specific way. Well that used to be me, and I see a lot of people going through that rabbit hole often. Going back to nature; the tree does not force the weather to be cold or hot. It adapts to it. And uses all seasons for it’s betterment. Note to self (I hope you consider this too). When you find yourself in a tough situation, look at your surrounding. What would best fit in that environment n mold yourself to it.
- Number three — Don’t mistake adapting to your environment for not having an identity.A tree remain a tree regardless of the seasons. Water is water despite the shape it takes. Don’t mistake rigidity for identity. To be able to truly live this truth one has to know what makes them tick. Knowing who you are enables you to change freely. It gives you the freedom to play your role, take different forms, go through different seasons with the confidence that you are adapting, and that is okay.
